Paul English just seems like a regular uber driver. He is a middle aged man living in Boston who loves talking to the people as he drives them to their destination.

He drives him Tesla Model S, and does this a few hours a week in and around Boston. He even dressed up as a vampire when he ubered people around on Halloween.

Paul is the co-founder of a travel booking site you have definitely heard of called Kayak. Priceline bought the company for $1.8 billion in 2012.

It may seem strange that a billionaire is now an uber driver for a living, but the reason why is actually very interesting.

Paul realized that most of his meets and outings were with people in tech or nonprofits, and he wanted to broaden his client base. He has a notebook in his car and writes down a sentence about every person that rides in his car. Being an uber driver helps Paul understand people.

Ubering has helped him also understand how service-economy professionals are rated. He has a new startup called Lola which has raised $19.7 million and it is launching soon. It will have travel agents create custom itineraries for consumers who will rate their experience.

Paul has another plan along with being an uber driver and launching another business. He says ‘there’s a bar right next to my office. We’ve talked about my helping out behind the bar on Mondays as a bar back.’ He adds ‘it would be a cool way to get to know new people.’ He definitely has an interesting way of getting to know people and research consumers in a new way.
